The launch of the inaugural Denver Business Technology Expo this year generated some confusion among the city’s tech players.
The news release announcing the event stated that the co-organizer, Colorado Technology Partners, is “a Denver/Boulder business technology trade association.”
The event was created in partnership with the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, giving credibility to CTP and the expo.
But CTP is not a trade association. In Colorado, that role belongs to the Colorado Technology Association, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of about 10,000 members.
CTP is a group of 14 for-profit companies that meets monthly to share customer leads and referrals.
“The problem with an organization like CTP is they’re young and they’re inexperienced in what they’re doing,” said CTA president Steve Foster. “In a bit of a way, they’ve misled through their advertising and marketing.”
Also irking CTA is CTP’s decision to hold the tech expo in October, the same month as CTA’s annual DemoGala tech conference.
But the groups apparently have kissed and made up.
“We’re not a nonprofit association like they are,” Kevin Meilinger, a technology marketer with CTP. “We’re not an association where anybody can join. We’re a partnership with Colorado technology companies.”
CTP president David DeCamillis acknowledged that the group made a mistake by labeling itself as a trade association.
DeCamillis said he has invited Foster to present the kickoff speech at the tech expo and will give CTA a free booth.
The event is designed to expose customers of CTP’s member companies to technologies that might affect their businesses.
“We want to partner with any association like CTA or the Colorado Technology Partners to expose our members to new technology opportunities and ideals,” said Denver chamber chief operating officer Robert Blankenship. “That’s what we’re doing.”
